CBC to Air “Thoroughly Modern Marriage” Documentary

Does Marriage Still Matter?

On Thursday January 20 at 9PM in Canada (9:30PM in NFLD), the CBC is airing the documentary Thoroughly Modern Marriage.

Through interviews and discussions with couples, neurologists, sociologists and historians from across Canada, the documentary asks the fundamental questions: does marriage still matter? Is it “broken”? And if so, can and should it be saved?

I will watch with interest to learn more about the changing face of “modern marriage” (or rather, non-marriage). While I don’t expect any documentary to provide me with all of the answers, I do hope that it will clarify some of the issues that go into this important and topical issue – one that affects millions of people each year directly or indirectly.

After you watch the documentary, please come back here to share your comments, ideas and insights – both positive and negative.

Interesting to learn from the documentary that Canada, for the first time have more single people than married people. It also siad married people supposedly enjoy better health, but it does not address if what happens after divorce.

The producer of the show said even though divorce gets a lot of coverage, marriage is not going away.

I never knew The marriage capital of Canada is Hanover, in Manitoba, where nearly 70 per cent of adults are married, 20 per cent higher than the national average. Quebec has the lowest rate.

There was a couple that practice open marriage and talks about how in the last 3 years, they are able to find more people like them. I imagine one place would be Ashley Madison, the website for married people who want relationships outside of their marraige. This prompted me to go to that site for the first time. I saw their tag line “Life is too short. Have an affair.” I was surprised by that. I guess I feel that it is encouraging people to have affairs, I thought they were there for people who have decided to have affairs. I also saw on their home page that it claims to have over 8 million members. I didn’t “join for free” as I feel I would be adding to their promotion.
